Vassar will soon be 335 miles away in college. People continue asking us how we’ll handle his absence. Although we realize the origin, we’re confused by the question.

When we travel, whether or not and how much to share is something I still haven't worked out with myself or Vassar. I'm sure we'll talk about it. For now, I'll reflect on whether the sensitivity has a purpose.

Sure, we’ll miss him. And yes, life moves fast. It seemed like just yesterday he started high school.

If you think about it a little, these are obvious answers. But consider the conflict of wanting him to be here while we gradually lose touch with life’s past. It’s a more subtle conversation worth talking about.

Maybe in all my efforts to minimize fooling with modern technology, it could be leveraged to transmit our new experiences to him. Will he find it distracting? and are we only grasping to relationships that no longer exist?

That will be the conversation soon, when we adjust to talking with him on a semi-weekly basis.
