Technology has solved old economic problems by giving us new psychological problems. The Internet has not just open-sourced information; it has also open-sourced insecurity, self-doubt, and shame.
Our existence is often a trade-off. For example, if I built a hut in the middle of the ancient forest, some squirrel or grouse may lose a meal because I used a tree that otherwise might grow cones or nuts or house a bug. Either that animal goes hungry, or I might die without a shelter. I have to serve my own interest, otherwise what’s the point of being alive?
We can’t all occupy the same space without some sort of casualty. Simple restraint may minimize our impact, but it isn’t a common value. And we can’t just reverse our progress.
So, at what point do we stop feeling guilty about living?
